DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
This painting was commissioned by the wealthy Spannocchi family.
It depicts the Gospel episode in which King Herod orders the killing of the children.
The scene is full of movement, drama, and vibrant colors, with desperate mothers and ruthless soldiers.
This is the last of four versions the painter dedicated to this tragic theme.
The other three works are located:
- At the Capodimonte Museum in Naples
- On the floor of Siena Cathedral
- In the complex of Santa Maria della Scala, but the painting originally came from the church of
