Madonna col Bambino ei santi Benedetto, Cirino, Donato e Giustina
Artist: Sano di Pietro
Year: 1476
Current location: Abbazia dei Santi Salvatore e Cirino
Original location: Abbazia dei Santi Salvatore e Cirino
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The altarpiece, painted late in Sano di Pietro's life, was created for the church of Abbadia in Isola, commissioned by Don Benedetto and Don Francesco, both monks of the monastery, who are depicted at the feet of the Virgin, on a much smaller scale.
The main panel of the triptych depicts a solemn sacred conversation.
The four saints in the two side panels, from left: Saint Benedict, absorbed in spiritual writing, the bishops Cirino, Donato, and Saint Giustina contemplate the Virgin Mary holding the Child in her lap.
The golden background and marble step are the point at which the interior of the group creates the illusion of a unified space. In the upper section, Christ in the center blesses the faithful, while in each of the two side panels, the Archangel and the Virgin Mary converse from a distance as the prophesied miracle is fulfilled.
