DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

The four panels of the bier painted by Rutilio Manetti are currently displayed separately, as independent works on the walls of the nave of the Church of Saints Nicholas and Lucy.

The panels are hung at a height that prevents close-up viewing, and all are shrouded in semi-darkness.

In such conditions, it is impossible to appreciate the high artistic quality, the rendering of light, the pale, rosy flesh tones, and the beauty of the features that are nevertheless found in each of these four figures, so characteristic of Manetti's style.
The series of four figures, including a Virgin and Child, Lucy of Syracuse, a Pietà, and Nicholas of Bari, was executed by Manetti in 1625 to replace an earlier bier of the Company of Saints Nicholas and Lucy, previously painted by Domenico Beccafumi, which Grand Duke Ferdinand II, a particular admirer of the figure of Saint Lucy, had desired to possess. Since the Grand Duke's desire had the force of an order, the work was the subject of a forced donation by the confraternity.
