La Madonna col Bambino tra i santi Anna e Gioacchino Siena
Artist: Maestro di Tressa
Year: 1240 circa
Current location: Collezione Chigi Saracini
Original location:
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
This work by the Master of Tressa has a structure similar to that of the Madonna of Tressa: eyes looking upward, faces rendered with unshaded lines of light and shadow, and basic, bright colors. However, improvements derived from the example of the Lucca-born Berlinghiero Berlinghieri and other figurative movements are evident, such as the streaks of lighter highlights in the drapery, the greater movement of the mother and child's legs, and Mary's more familiar grasp of the Child.

Works with a silver background are rare: not so much because it was less common than gold, but because, being subject to inexorable tarnishing, it often led to the replacement of altarpieces, resulting in their destruction.
